School of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering

The present day "School of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering" was established in 1957, as the Metals Melting & Casting division in what was then known as the Tehran Institute of Technology (TIT). Initially, a four year intensive curriculum in Metals Melting & Casting became a new Metals Engineering degree. And likewise in 1961, the institute initiated an undergraduate program under the Bachelor of Science in Engineering. In 1970 TIT expanded its academic programs and was renamed Iran College of Science & Technology, ICST. . This expansion lead to the formation of the Dept. of Metallurgy, which offered undergraduate degrees in Metal Casting & Extractive Metallurgy. With industrial advancements in Iran’s steel, copper, aluminum, automotive, cement and construction productions, the necessity for an increase in scientific & technical academic programs became ever more evident. In 1977 the institute was once again renamed for its program expansion as the Iran University Science & Technology (IUST). Simultaneously, the Metallurgy Department advanced and became the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering. This department was a pioneer in the country for running the first undergraduate ceramic engineering discipline in 1968, which has had a great impact on the development of ceramic industries in Iran. Additionally, the department of Materials Science & Engineering offers undergraduate degrees in Extractive Metallurgy & Industrial Metallurgy, and graduate degrees in Materials Design and Selection, Extractive Metallurgy, Ceramic Engineering, Casting, and Biomaterials. The department began its PhD program in 1991 as the need for advanced research in various areas of materials increased. Today, the department has over 800 full-time students with more than 200 graduate students.

I. Contract research projects are selected and promoted by outside bodies namely the industries.
II. Research, both theoretical and applied, arise primarily from the interests of students and staff.

With its 36 faculty, the school has currently enrolled more than 600 undergraduate students, and 250 graduate students, among which 25% are PhD students. . The school’s library is equipped with 7000 specialized volumes and subscriptions to 50 scientific journals available to students and faculty.

The library is equipped with on and off- line search systems, including the accessible Metadex data-bank. The school’s computer center provides facilities for students and faculty , and frequent computer application courses in materials science .
